Tony Stewart’s Custom Hearse on Display at SpeedwayEXPO
Will Castro from SpeedTV’s Unique Whips to Appear

Salisbury, MA (February 10): While Tony Stewart is racing in Vegas, his fans and auto enthusiasts will enjoy what “Smoke” sent to SpeedwayEXPO presented by Sunoco on February 29-March 2. The 1984 Cadillac Brougham hearse often referred to as one of Tony’s prize possessions will be on display throughout the weekend.

The tricked-out hearse was restored and customized by Will Castro’s Unique Autosports of Long Island for the Speed Channel show Unique Whips. Castro will also appear at SpeedwayEXPO and sign autographs from noon to 5:00 on Sunday, March 2.

The hearse, which Stewart bought “just to mess with people,” is affectionately called "Smoke deVille." Acquired from a Cincinnati funeral home, Stewart delivered the hearse to Castro in 2006 for a five-month customization. The finished product includes murals, body modifications and tons of interior accessories. Attendees at SpeedwayEXPO will see the unique vehicle up close.

Will Castro is the founder and owner of Unique Autosports, a leading automotive customizer. While still in high school, Will got a taste of the car business while working at a body shop. That sparked him to open Willie’s Shape & Shine, in Islip, New York, in the 1980s. The business, and demand for his conversions, grew. He then formed Unique Conversions and, in 1999, changed the name to Unique Autosports.

Unique’s first celebrity clients were Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith and the rap pioneers EPMD. Word of Castro’s craftsmanship quickly spread through the rap community and landed Hip-Hop artists like Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Wyclef, Fat Joe and more. Castro’s client list also includes Marc Anthony, John Singleton, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Marcus Camby, Jermaine O'Neal, Yao Ming, Pamela Anderson and Tom Wolfe as well as many NASCAR, NFL and MLB stars. His work has been featured on MTV Cribs, VH1, MTV2, ESPN, Fox, CBS and BET. His top-rated show on SpeedTV, Unique Whips, draws more than a million viewers and fans around the world.

SpeedwayEXPO to Make $5,000 Racing Excellence Award

Salisbury, MA (February 1): SpeedwayEXPO will present a $5,000 recognition award to a deserving race team during the second annual SpeedwayEXPO presented by Sunoco, February 29-March 2 at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA. All racers who compete weekly in the Northeast will be eligible for the “Race to Excellence” Award and the cash prize of $5,000.

The strength of SpeedwayEXPO lies in the strong network of people who provide the excitement of short-track racing. The future of racing also lies with those same individuals, who compete weekly at tracks in the northeast. From Modifieds to Late Models, Street Stocks to Mini Sprints and from Lebanon Valley Speedway to Whip City from Twin State to Thompson and everywhere inbetween, the families who work hard all week to play hard on the weekend help make SpeedwayEXPO and short track racing special.

“Without short-track, we would have no EXPO and, for that matter, no magazine,” said EXPO’s producer, Silvio Calabi, who is also the publisher of Speedway Illustrated Magazine. “The company is pleased to make this extra commitment to our community.”

“It is important to all of us at SpeedwayEXPO that racers’ efforts are appreciated and supported,” said Event Coordinator Dale Wolbrink. “With this cash prize we can reduce the sacrifices that at least one team makes in order pursue its weekly racing passion.”

To be eligible, a driver or car owner must submit a one-page essay explaining why his or her race team deserves the “Race to Excellence” Award. Applications will be accepted via post at SpeedwayEXPO, 107 Elm Street, Salisbury, MA 01952 or online at editorial@speedwayillustrated.com. A link will also be available on the EXPO website at speedwayexpo.com.

Applicants must be registered with a local track, must have competed in a minimum of seven races (at any track) in 2007, and will be required to run a minimum of seven races during the 2008 season. Any team that competes weekly in a regional touring series or at a local weekly track in the Northeast can enter to win SpeedwayEXPO’s “Race to Excellence” Award.

A panel of judges will select the winning essay. The winner will be announced on Sunday, March 2, at SpeedwayEXPO. The winner must be present to collect the $5,000 prize.

Although only one racer can take home the coveted prize, all competitors will leave SpeedwayEXPO a little richer. A host of seminars have been scheduled for the weekend to help racers gain competitive advantage as they prepare for the upcoming season. Seminars will address topics like sponsorship searches, team building, safety, media relations and much more. A complete schedule of events is online at speedwayexpo.com.

Sunoco Named Title Sponsor of SpeedwayEXPO 2008

Salisbury, MA (January 23, 2008): Performance Media has reached an agreement to make Sunoco the presenting sponsor of SpeedwayEXPO, its motorsports exposition. On February 29-March 2 the Eastern States Exposition, in West Springfield, MA, the “Home of the Big E,” will become the home of the largest racing show in the Northeast. SpeedwayEXPO will take over the 130,000-square-foot Mallary Complex with exhibits from local and regional race tracks and sanctioning bodies, vendors of performance parts and accessories, retailers of collectibles and memorabilia and much more.

The sponsorship was a perfect fit for both national companies, who have strong ties to the Northeast and share an interest in the strength and longevity of professional and grassroots motorsports. Performance Media also publishes Speedway Illustrated Magazine.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Sunoco has signed on as the title sponsor, said the magazine’s founder, Dick Berggren. “Through their New England Racing Fuels and its Sunoco products, Mike Joy and John Holland have supported local level auto racing in the Northeast on many levels. Whenever they’ve seen an opportunity to grow the sport, they have been on board so we’re delighted that they are now a big part of Speedway EXPO.”

Sunoco executive Mike Joy and New England Race Fuels COO John Holland, both strong advocates of short-track racing, are working with the SpeedwayEXPO team to create a number of exciting opportunities for the 2008 show.

“We’re really excited to bring Sunoco on board with SpeedwayEXPO," said Joy. “New England racers and fans deserve a great pre-season racing show, and the key to its success is getting the word out.

The show will allow Sunoco and its regional retailers to work directly with SpeedwayEXPO to bring greater visibility and a renewed sense of excitement to racing in the Northeast.

“Sunoco retailers throughout the region will soon have show information, and our goal is to help bring back the huge crowds that used to come to the Big E in past years.”

In the weeks leading up to EXPO, discount show coupons will be available at participating Sunoco retailers. At the show, approximately $900 in gasoline gift cards will be given away to attendees and racers will be eligible to win 55-gallon drums of Sunoco race fuel.

SpeedwayEXPO is where short-track adrenaline meets the thrill of big-league racing. A broad mixture of cars from tracks around the Northeast will combine asphalt and dirt stock-car racing with drag racing, motocross and other motorsports. The trade portion of the event, with vendors of performance parts and accessories, is always one of the main attractions for enthusiasts and racers.

The entertainment will also include collectibles and memorabilia vendors along with a host of interactive displays, educational seminars, autograph sessions and special events for the whole family. SpeedwayEXPO is guaranteed to chase away those winter blues and off-season doldrums.

Impact of EXPO ’07 Still Being Felt at SpeedwayEXPO 2008 Approaches
BSA Troop from Western MA Benefits from EXPO Involvement

Salisbury, MA: The staff of Speedway Illustrated is hard at work preparing for their 2nd annual SpeedwayEXPO. With a new building at the Eastern States Exposition and the same flair for excitement, the February 29-March 2 event is already shaping up to be one of the biggest events of the 2008 racing season.

No success was more gratifying or more motivating than that experienced by one of EXPO’s charter guests. Last March SpeedwayEXPO provided promotional and fund-raising opportunities to several worthy charities, including the Boy Scout Venture Crew 35. Seven months later this non-profit organization is still realizing the benefits of its SpeedwayEXPO participation.

Troop 35 is a Boy Scout Troop from the Springfield/Chicopee (MA) district of the Pioneer Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America organized as an elite “Venture Crew.” Known for their unusual undertakings and lofty goals, this year Troop 35 elected to tackle the Baja as Venture Crew Racing.

This team of boys and girls, ages 14-21, with their adult leadership, decided to participate in the Tecaté SCORE Baja 1000—the most famous American off-road race. They have spent the months designing and building a race truck to compete in the rigorous event.

“Speedway Expo was a huge help to us, both directly and indirectly,” said Steven Harrell, Crew 35 Baja Coordinator. “Directly, we recruited three scouts and one very excited, Baja-happy father. We also met people from Central Connecticut Four Wheelers, Rory from Rory’s Off-Road Supply and others who have helped us since March.”

Contacts made during the show have developed into meaningful partnerships for the kids and their program. Over the summer, with the help of CC4W, Team 35 set up a display at the Southwick race track during off-road races. A chance meeting led to a defining moment for the future of the group: “One day on my way up to the track, I ran into a man at a gas station who had built an all-tubing, fully street-legal buggy,” said Harrell. “I talked to him about our project, handed him one of our flyers, and we went our separate ways. A day later he emailed me. Today he is our team’s chief mechanic.”

The owner of the track also hired two of the Scouts as pit security when the AMA Motocross riders came to town. Their salaries went directly into the Venture Crew 35 program. In addition, AMA riders including Ricky Carmichael, the Alessi Brothers and Bubba Stewart donated autographed race gear to the cause, which, through eBay, raised a further $900. Since then the group has acquired a number of product sponsors such as KC HiLiTES, K&N Filters, Magnaflow Exhaust and Lincoln Welders.

Since SpeedwayEXPO, Venture Crew 35 has also added the longest off-road race in the United States to its lofty goals—the Best in the Desert Series’ Vegas to Reno race.

At SpeedwayEXPO ‘07 Venture Crew 35 had little more than a giant wooden box of parts and accessories. Today, thanks to the efforts of chief mechanic Jeff Bergen, they have a '98 Ford Ranger X-cab short-box pickup, already accessorized with special wheels and tires and a body-lift kit. ”We can't wait to show off our new truck at Expo,” said Harrell. To learn more, log on to venturecrew35.org.

SpeedwayEXPO is just as excited to see the new truck and share the inspiring story of Troop 35 with everyone at the February 28-March 2, 2008, event.

The 2nd Annual SpeedwayEXPO will be in the Mallory Complex at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA, for three days of racing fun. To see highlights of SpeedwayEXPO ‘07 and to track the progress of the coming event, visit speedwayexpo.com.

SpeedwayEXPO Recognized for Excellence

Salisbury, MA: While things have been progressing behind the scenes for the 2nd Annual SpeedwayEXPO, some of its team members have been very much in the limelight lately. Dick Berggren recently was honored with the Bobby Isaac Memorial Award and SpeedwayEXPO itself was recognized by Racing Against Cancer™ for its involvement with the program in 2007.

On October 12, Berggren received the Bobby Isaac Award during pre-race ceremonies for the Busch Series race at Lowe’s. The award is presented annually by Lowe’s Motor Speedway to an individual in recognition of outstanding contribution to short-track racing.

“Much like Isaac, [Berggren] possesses a strong passion for short-track racing,” said President and General Manager, Humpy Wheeler, “and fortunately [he] has been willing to share that passion with race fans around the world through [his] work as a writer, editor and broadcaster. [His] dedication to the local racer and promoter has never waned, and the industry is much stronger for it.”

The Bobby Isaac Award dates back 30 years and past winners include Chris Economaki, Dick Trickle, Hugh Deery, Tommy Houston, Jack Ingram and others.

Then, on November 10, Cal Green, Director of SpeedwayEXPO Sales, accepted an award on behalf of Speedway Illustrated, the racing magazine that produces EXPO, from Racing Against Cancer™. R.A.C.’s ’07 fund-raising kicked off on a high note when more than $1,766 was raised at the display provided by SpeedwayEXPO last March. At the ceremony, Dick Cyr, founder of David’s House, a haven for terminally ill children receiving treatment through Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, a beneficiary of the R.A.C. Program, called the racing community “the most generous and most caring people [he] had ever worked with.”

To help boost the organization’s efforts, SpeedwayEXPO had named R.A.C. the beneficiary of a rather unorthodox fund-raiser. The “Anger Management” charity event gave fans and competitors—who may have seen things differently at the race track a time or two—the opportunity to “pay back” a group of good-natured track officials. For a $5 donation, participants got the opportunity to sink the officials in a dunk tank at the show. Corey Boudreau of Seekonk Speedway; Andy Christmas from Monadnock Speedway; Mike Parks of Twin State Speedway and Mike Scrivani of the Northeastern Midget Association each took a turn in the tank and raised hundreds of dollars for R.A.C.

With activities like “Spin to Win” for prizes such as T-shirts, M&Ms candy, buffet meals at Foxwoods Resort Casino, subscriptions to Speedway Illustrated and other items, as well as a raffle for two go-karts courtesy of General Electric, the R.A.C. Team raised a further $1,250 through the generosity of EXPO fans.

SpeedwayEXPO is looking forward to working with the Racing Against Cancer Team again in 2008, and is looking for volunteers or nominations for the Anger Management event. Replies can reach the EXPO staff at racinpr@aol.com.

The entire staff of SpeedwayEXPO shares in the excitement of these two great honors. The sense of pride that each has instilled will reinforce the team as they continue to build the 2nd Annual SpeedwayEXPO. The racing community is invited to follow the show’s progress online at www.speedwayexpo.com.

SpeedwayEXPO Expands to Mallary Complex in 2008

Salisbury, MA: A year ago, Speedway Illustrated announced a new racing exposition. Then, after months of preparation, the first-ever SpeedwayEXPO was presented to an expectant crowd in early March this year. By all measures, the event was a resounding triumph. SpeedwayEXPO had successfully rejuvenated a Northeastern tradition and brought together short-track and big-league enthusiasts, drivers, teams and suppliers.

As the ’07 racing season winds down, the magazine’s staff is hard at work on the 2nd annual SpeedwayEXPO, February 29 - March 2, 2008. According to Karl Fredrickson, the magazine’s editor, “We threw a party for 7,000 of our friends. This one’s going to be even bigger and better!”

In 2008 all the excitement of SpeedwayEXPO will be under one roof. The event has been moved to the Mallary Complex, adjacent to the two smaller buildings where XPO’07 was held, at the Eastern States Exposition grounds in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Dick Berggren, Speedway Illustrated’s founder, said, “The Mallary Complex is one of the Big E’s newest and best venues—and, with 130,000 square feet, it’s got room for everything, including the special events and seminars and the autograph sessions.” With a larger floor and updated amenities, the Mallary Complex will be a welcome change for exhibitors at SpeedwayEXPO ’08, and show-goers will no longer have to brave the weather to walk from one building to another.

A broad mix of tracks from around the Northeast will offer asphalt and dirt racing with drag racing and other forms of motorsports. Vendors of performance parts and accessories again will be one of the main attractions for enthusiasts and racers.

As SpeedwayEXPO ’08 develops, the racing community is invited to follow its progress online at www.speedwayexpo.com. The site is the comprehensive source for all show information, and it provides a look back at the fun and excitement of the ’07 event as well.
